Post-concussive symptoms and traumatic brain injury (TBI) can impact adolescent mental health, including increasing risk for depression and suicidal thoughts and behaviors. In this webinar Dr. Brent will discuss; prevalence and risk factors for suicidal behaviors and TBI, the inter-relationship between post-concussive symptoms and suicidal behavior, psychosocial and medication intervention studies, and implications for assessment and management.

In this presentation, Dr. Brent addresses the relationship between method availability and suicide risk. A particular focus is on the impact of the change in the availability of methods on suicide rates at the population level. Additionally, effects of counseling and patient education on reducing access to lethal means in a clinical setting are discussed.

On May 17, 2012, individuals involved with Pennsylvania’s Garrett Lee Smith grant project, “Youth Suicide Prevention in Primary Care,” presented a webinar, which was sponsored by the National Technical Assistance Center for Children’s Mental Health at Georgetown University. They discussed the Behavioral Health-Works program, a multi-faceted, system change approach which simultaneously focuses on mental health education for the Primary Care Provider (PCP), web based screening for suicide and other key behavioral health problems, and improving the process for referring youth to mental health services. Outcomes indicate increased rates of identification of c youth and greater satisfaction with the collaboration between these systems of care. The presentation will discuss these challenges, solutions, program components and outcomes.

This is a suite of three (Elementary, Middle and High School) online, interactive simulations designed to prepare educators to identify, approach, and refer at-risk students. In these role-play scenarios, the learner practices talking with a virtual student, using open-ended questions, reflective listening and other motivational interviewing techniques to achieve several goals: Broach the topic of psychological distress, motivate the student to seek help and avoid common pitfalls, such as attempting to diagnose the problem or giving unwarranted advice.

This is a suite of two (a faculty /staff and a student version) an online professional development simulation designed to help university and college faculty and staff build confidence, knowledge, and skills to best support students exhibiting signs of psychological distress. The program uses simulated conversations with virtual students to provide learners with hands-on practice in approaching students they are concerned about and, if necessary, how to refer them to support services.

This is a 25-minute interactive, high school peer-to-peer role-play simulation. Students practice talking with a virtual friend using open-ended questions, reflective listening and other motivational interviewing techniques to achieve several goals: Broach the topic of psychological distress, motivate the friend to seek help and avoid common pitfalls, such as a giving unwarranted advice.

This is a suite of two (a faculty /staff and a student version)  online, interactive learning experience that assists institutions of higher education in creating a safe and supportive campus community by 1) increasing awareness and empathy for the challenges faced by LGBTQ students, and 2) building the skills of faculty and staff to model respectful behavior, including managing classroom discussions that may include bias comments or attitudes or handling an LGBTQ-related issue.

The mission of the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide is to reduce the number of youth suicides and attempted suicides by encouraging overall public awareness through the development and promotion of educational training programs for teens, parents and educators. The Jason Foundation, Inc. series of online Staff Development Training Modules provide information on the awareness and prevention of youth suicide.

These training modules are suitable for teachers, coaches, other school personnel, youth workers, first responders, foster parents and any adult who works with or interacts with young people or wants to learn more about youth suicide. This series of programs introduces the scope and magnitude of the problem of youth suicide, the signs of concern, risk factors, how to recognize young people who may be struggling, how to approach the student and help an at-risk youth find resources for assistance. At the conclusion of each training module, an opportunity to print a certificate of completion is provided.

This is a 30-minute online interactive training program that helps youth-serving adults understand the challenges that LGBTQ youth face and gives them a chance to practice techniques for creating a safer and more supportive environment, including 1) curtailing instances of harassment and use of homophobic language, and 2) connecting with a student who has been the target of harassment. Step In, Speak Up! is listed in the AFSP/SPRC Best Practices Registry for Suicide Prevention.

The Trevor Lifeguard Workshop is a video workshop by The Trevor Project designed for educators, school counselors, school nurses, and others who regularly interact with youth.

The Trevor Lifeguard Workshop video trains students to a) identify the challenges faced by LGBTQ people, b) recognize the warning signs of suicide, and c) respond to someone who may be in crisis in a way that keeps themselves and their peers safe. This video training is based on Trevor’s in-person workshop that is listed in the SPRC/AFSP Best Practice Registry for Suicide Prevention and is free of charge to educators and youth service providers.

LivingWorks programs focus on developing suicide awareness through programs such as suicideTALK, and safeTALK.
